Determine the size and location of your pergola, taking into account the type of shade you want to create and the amount of sun it will receive. Make a detailed sketch of your plan and calculate the quantities and lengths of all the materials required.

Step 2: Assemble your pergola posts

The posts are the foundation of your pergola, so it's important to level and secure them properly.

Pergola with wooden posts

If you don't have a slab

Measure the width and depth of the holes required for your posts, and dig holes approximately 80 cm wide.

Place approximately 15 cm of gravel at the bottom of the holes to drain off rainwater, and set the posts in place, checking the level as you go. Prepare a concrete mix and fill the holes around the posts, compacting it to eliminate air bubbles. Leave the concrete to set for at least 48 hours.

If you have a slab

Mark out the dimensions of the pergola on your slab. Position the post supports and drill the holes. Use dowels or Spits to secure the post supports firmly to the ground. You can now use your level to screw the wooden posts into their brackets.

Pergola with concrete slab

Step 3: Installing the beams

The beams run parallel to the posts and will support the rafters. Measure and cut the beams to size, then install them by securing them to the top of the posts using galvanized or stainless steel brackets. Make sure the beams are level and plumb. Use the largest possible screws to build a solid pergola.

Step 4: Install the rafters

The rafters run perpendicular to the beams and form the main support for your pergola roof. Measure and cut the rafters to size, then fasten them to the beams with nails or screws. Space the rafters evenly, generally no more than 25 cm apart, depending on their size and the desired effect.

You can lay all the rafters without screwing them down, to define the spacing that looks best to you.

Step 5: Finishing the pergola

Once the basic structure of the pergola is complete, you need to protect the wood from the elements. There are several options for finishing the wood: paint or stain.

You can choose to paint the wood a solid color, or use a clear or semi-transparent stain to let the wood's natural beauty shine through.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the paint or stain you choose, and apply it on a day when it's not raining.

You can then add climbing plants or canvases for extra shade.

Congratulations! Your pergola is now complete. It's a beautiful addition to your garden and a perfect place to relax and entertain guests. Building your own pergola can be a rewarding and satisfying experience, and can add value to your home. Make the most of it!

Pergola finishing - a matter of detail

Conclusion

Building a wooden pergola can be a fun and satisfying DIY project.
